Doug O’Laughlin is back on the SemiAnalysis podcast in the middle of a semis drawdown, arguing that the thing which finally binds this cycle isn’t chips or demand. It’s electricians and the bond market.

The short version, if you don’t have the time:

  • Hyperscalers have raised roughly $450bn of debt year to date, behind only the US government and China as issuers.

  • The buyers are life insurers funding annuities. The buildout runs on retiree assets, and that pool can’t double.

  • A lender choosing between agency mortgage paper near 5% and a hyperscaler at 7-8% takes the hyperscaler, and mortgage costs go up.
